More Great Things About Belgium

Just a short hop from Brussels, (and a two-hour train ride from Paris) the city of Antwerp offers many beauties and surprises, aside from Axel Vervoordt's antiques- and art-filled castle.

Grote Markt, in the old city center.

The Cathedral of Our Lady is considered to be one of the finest gothic buildings in Europe.

The Antwerp Zoo. I love how the design of the formal garden – through contrasting color borders and angular shapes – mimics that of the architecture. I have to say that I'm not fond of zoos in general, because I feel the animals often suffer from being exploited for the entertainment of humans, but the Antwerp Zoo was recognized as the "most romantic and best preserved 19th century zoo" in 2007, because of the beautiful gardens and well-preserved architecture. The zoo stresses wildlife and nature preservation, and participates in endangered species programs.

The gorgeous, mostly white Hotel De Witte Lelie (as seen on The Style Saloniste) looks to be a compelling enough reason, on its own, to visit Antwerp. With just 11 rooms, the boutique hotel was designed with a mix of modern and traditional furnishings placed amidst 17th century grand and glorious spaces. Just my style.

Best of all, if you are able to take advantage of their Summer Special, Hotel De Witte Lelie is amazingly affordable.
