I seem to be naturally drawn to anything French – the language – spoken and written, the style, the culture, the landscape, and even the people. I think I must have lived there in a previous life, and I dream of going back.
For the time being (and until I find that perfect chartreuse fabric), I'm going to experiment with some cocktails using the liqueur of the same name. How pretty will these drinks look!
You probably know that the liqueur is made by the Chartreuse monks in the north of France, from an ancient recipe. It was originally referred to as an "elixir of long life," (I think I need a lot of that) and is made of 130 different herbs and botanicals. The color is natural, although the original formula is called Green Chartreuse, and a newer formula, milder and sweeter, is the Yellow Chartreuse. The elixir reportedly has an anise flavor, so this drink recipe sounds like it might be tasty. If not, the bottle can just sit there and look beautiful. I'll report back on my drink success – and if anyone else tries it, let me know what you think.
Cloister
1 1/2 oz gin
1/2 oz Yellow Chartreuse
1/2 oz grapefruit juice
1/4 oz lemon juice
1/4 oz simple syrup
Recipe from Gonzo Gastronomy.

HAHA! We used to drink something called "swampwater" that had green chartreuse, vodka and pineapple juice, amongst other things. college friends used to serve in in an aquarium. it was sort of a turgid greeny colour. bletch!
Meg, you've burst my bubble! I'm still going to try a cocktail or two.
Hopefully a better recipe than your aquarium blend ... ugh.

Chartreuse was the color of my first living room in the most divine little cottage in Pasadena.California.
1970.
Little did I know it was the actual house of one of the premier architects ever in Southern California.
It was....and is....a tiny cottage. Roland Coate....the architect. Wait till you hear what it cost!
You will all gag! 39,500.00 dollars.
Who knows what now......but even with the recent slowdown.....at least a million........or close. Yowzers.
The living room and entry and dining room.....Chartreuse....
I loved it.....I decorated with it....and my career started!
YAY Chartreuse!
Penny - I would sure love to see that cottage. Do you have photos?

First, LOVE the flowers. Secondly, love the chartreuse! Think of the delightful drinks you could make with that.
S.A. - Whenever I find chartreuse flowers at Publix, I buy a few bunches. I love one-color bouquets. As for the drinks, I think I can make something pretty, but as for taste ... I'm waiting for my order to arrive, and then we'll see!
