Daughter of the Gilded Age, Mistress of American Manners

"Men had to be taught not to blow their noses into their hands or to spit tobacco onto ladies' backs."

"Post dictated her books in a fluttery voice while lying in bed and made her first appearance of the day downstairs for lunch."*

Oh, and Ms. Post said it's ok to put your elbows on the table.

Meg - I thought so too. She sounds like quite a character.

I would love to read this - manners can only ever improve!

Vicki - I agree. And what is important: Ms Post felt that good manners were simply an effort to be kind and considerate of others.

I just bought this book! You must also read her Blue Book on decoration ... dated but still quite valuable in terms of no-nonsense ideas.

AAL - I didn't realize she had a book on decoration. I'll look for it - thanks!

see? i've been telling the men in my life to quit blowing their nose in their hand.

doesn't she say something like, it's ok to have elbows on the table as long as the meal is finished? or the food has been cleared? something like that?

Megan - that is not a very appealing thought, is it!
From the review I read, it sounded like she thought elbows on the table to be inconsequential.
Aesthete, can you help us out on this?

Oh, I would love to read this! I cannot believe she ok's elbows on the table - I will have to tell my mom - that is one the biggies she always drilled into us as kids!

Anne - I haven't read her books (yet) but take a look at this excerpt:
http://www.bartleby.com/95/35.html

The very last paragraph is about elbows on the table. She considers it acceptable, at times, but I think your mom was mostly correct, esp. when it comes to kids.

This post reminds me of the book that I had, and someone borrowed and never returned....so much for manners. Wonder if there are any tips in regard to that! I do love the other books and will look forward to adding this to my collection.

Patricia - how ironic that someone would filch a book on manners!

Funny you should write about this because I was just eating my dinner, looking at my 13 year old son and thinking...'My word, I better give him some lessons in table manners...which fork etc...soon' !

Where have all the manners and etiquette gone? I say long live Emily Post!
