... in this modern Miami Beach home featured in Florida Inside Out magazine: an antique Comtoise clock.
After a bit of research, TT learned that Comtoise clocks were made for the common people in the Franché-Comte region of France, from the late 17th to the early 20th century and were found throughout France in the 19th century.
Only the French could come up with such beautiful design for the masses!

The clocks were originally meant to be in long, wood cases, but TT loves the wall-mount-look seen here. We located a design almost identical to the version in the Miami home at top, here. And found some other stunning examples here and here.

Francis Maitzner and Jean Moreau, in Comtoise Clocks - The Morbier and The Morez, 1992, refer to the clocks as "neglected for 200 years" and "the glory of and testament to a handful of men."

Thanks for making me aware of these very fabulous, over the top decorative pieces!
Thanks Bayou Contessa! I love the idea of these ornate clocks being made for the common folk and hanging in simple rustic farmhouses in France.

They remind me of the German Cuckoo Clocks, but much nicer. I adore.
Liberty Post, I agree. They are quite beautiful ... I love the hanging weights. But there's also a comical quality about them, maybe I've seen too many of those felix the cat kit-kat clocks from the 30s!
