What elevates a well-designed room from simply 'nice' to something really special?
As well as using overscale elements or intriguing and unusual color juxtapositions, an out-of-the-ordinary display of unexpected objects is a great way to add visual drama and interest to any space.

A large collection, when grouped together and creatively displayed, can transcend the value or appeal of the individual pieces. And if you have a large focal wall, that's a perfect place to start.

A collection of busts displayed on wall brackets takes this classically elegant dining room from beautiful to unforgettable. (Of course, a silver armadillo on the table doesn't hurt.) Image via Cote de Texas.

Faux flowers are strewn across the lacquered walls of this whimsical and edgy powder room designed by Katie Ridder. The sophistication of the highly charged wall color and shiny finish (not to mention the fabulous sink, vanity and mirror) is kept in check by the sweet flowers. This might not qualify so much as a collection, but each flower takes on special significance through careful placement. Photo from Katie Ridder.

Kelly Wearstler used (a lot of) British china to create a focal wall on an open-air patio at the Viceroy Hotel. White plates on a dark background provide real graphic punch. Photo from Modern Glamour by Kelly Wearstler.

Designer/architect Carlos Mollino framed a paper butterfly collection cut out of a book (Joyaux Ailés, published by Hachette, 1955). His apartment in a 19th century Italian villa has been turned into the Casa Mollino Museum (which sounds to us like a must-see on any trip to Turin). More about Carlos Mollino and the museum here. Beautiful post - my favorite pictures has to be the last one - the one with the plates in France!
Thanks, Joni! I might have guessed you'd like the second one too ... :)

"to be caught unaware by a stunning surprise" -- I like that!
I love groupings on walls. This was a wonderful post! Especially with all the plates up on the walls!
Karen
Neutral Dwelling, I loved that comment by KW!
Alkemie, thanks! I think large collections seem to make an interior feel much more personal.

Great selection of photos- each is striking in its own way.
Thanks, Peak of Chic!
I love these dramatic walls...what an interesting way to display collectibles such as plates and even sculpture heads! Such an interesting post!
I agree Emily - thanks!

Nice collection of very inspiring photos! These rooms are really and truly memorable ones. I remember the DR form Joni's post! Love the green powder room. I will reconsider what color to paint mine now.
Thanks Katiedid! I think a small powder room is a great place to do something really different, like an unusual or bright paint color.

Thanks Karen! One thing I always think about when I look at large collections like these, is how long it must have taken to arrange and hang everything. I think it shows great determination!
