Beauty and function

Out for a morning bike ride in late March, I stopped to take a few photos of the blooming Tabebuia trees in the neighborhood. The color of the flowers is such an intense shade of yellow, that when you see a tree in full bloom it is quite stunning.

I learned recently that the Tabebuia is the source of ipé wood, which I've been hearing so much about. Ipé is a very hard, insect-resistant wood (great for Florida because of our voracious termites) and is all the rage for outdoor uses and decking. Quite durable and denser than water (it sinks), its fire rating is the same as concrete.

The next time you hear about the wonderful qualities of ipé wood, think about these brilliant yellow flowers.

Happy weekend!

Christian, it's common name is trumpet tree, which I don't think sounds very pretty, so I always use the Latin name. There is also a pink variety which is beautiful, but the color doesn't have the intensity of the yellow.
