Shall We Dance?

In case there's anyone who hasn't seen this video, Nouvelle Vague's "Dance With Me," via The Year in Pictures, via YouTube, here it is again. We just can't get enough ... love the music, love the dancing, love the "characters". It's utterly charming and invokes another time and place, a place we dream of being. Turns out, 80's music isn't so bad after all. At least, not when it's been re-imagined with a bossa-nova beat, by a group of mostly french artists. (You knew there had to be something french about it
to catch my eye and ear.)

We found out that this video is from a 1964 French new wave film classic, "Bande À Part" (Band of Outsiders), directed by Jean-Luc Godard. Netflix calls it a free-spirited romp about two friends who meet a beautiful woman and make a plan to steal money from her aunt. This famous dance scene was edited slightly to synchronize with the Nouvelle Vague song. Added note: Going back through the archives of The Year in Pictures, you can also see the video of the original movie dance scene there and some additional trivia that James Danziger came up with, including:

• The film gave its name to Quentin Tarantino's production company, A Band Apart, and several of its scenes are echoed in "Pulp Fiction".

• Nouvelle Vague and Bossa Nova both translate to "New Wave" in English.

• In 2005, "Bande À Part" was the only Godard film selected for Time
Magazine's All Time Top 100 Films list.

I just stumbled upon your blog and found so many delightful, whimsical things! The meringue homage, Cally's wonderful creations...
I've seen a bunch of JL Godard films, but in French so I'm not sure about the one you mention. It doesn't get much better than Breathless, his first feature.

Thanks Mary-Laure! I'll post my mini-review of the movie after I watch it. I never saw Breathless, but wanted to. I'll put it on my list.
Thanks for the visit!

Me too, Carolina - And I do watch it over and over! I'm still waiting to get the original film from Netflix. Apparently it's gotten popular and there is a wait time.
